Firm pressure · Targeted
Slow, sustained work into the deeper muscle layers — for the knots that lighter massage glides straight over.
Where relaxation massage works across the surface, deep tissue works through it. The strokes are slower and the pressure is sustained rather than flowing, applied along the direction of the muscle fibres so it reaches the deeper layers of muscle and fascia where long-standing tightness accumulates.
This matters because chronic tension does not sit on top of a muscle — it sits inside it, and often inside the connective tissue wrapped around it. A light massage feels pleasant over that and changes very little. If you have had massages before and walked away thinking nothing actually moved, this is almost always why.
Deep tissue is not the same as painful. Discomfort during a specific release is normal and usually brief; sharp pain is not, and means the pressure needs to come down. The pressure is checked repeatedly through the session and adjusted on the spot.
Suitability
What it helps with
The session
A conversation and then some time simply feeling where the tissue is dense, guarded or restricted. This is not the same as where it hurts.
Broader, slower work first. Going straight into deep pressure on a cold muscle achieves nothing and hurts.
Held on specific points, often for longer than feels expected, until the tissue releases under the hand.
Tightness is rarely isolated. A locked shoulder usually involves the neck, chest and upper back too.
Lighter strokes to settle the area, then a short note on hydration and what may feel tender tomorrow.

At your home
Everything is brought to you: a premium massage oil or nourishing body cream and a clean, professional massager, for you alone.
Included with every session
Small touches that come with your massage to ease you into deeper relaxation and help your natural happy hormones flow — always included, and never charged separately.
Questions
There is usually some discomfort as a specific point releases, and that generally passes within seconds. It should never be sharp pain, and it should never be something you brace through in silence. Say so and the pressure comes down immediately.
Mild tenderness for a day or two is common, similar to the feeling after a workout. Drinking water and avoiding anything strenuous that evening helps. If soreness is severe or lasts beyond three days, the pressure was too much and should be reduced next time.
For a long-standing problem, sessions roughly a fortnight apart tend to produce more change than a single session. Once things have settled, most clients move to monthly.
Not without medical clearance. Massage over an undiagnosed or acute injury can make it worse. Tell us what is going on before booking and we will say honestly whether to proceed.
No. It is targeted. Most of a deep tissue session is spent on two or three problem areas, with lighter work elsewhere. Strong pressure over the whole body for an hour is neither useful nor pleasant.
The therapist works slowly and firmly into specific areas of tightness, rather than covering the whole body evenly. Pressure is built up gradually so the muscle releases instead of bracing against it, which is why the pace is slower than a relaxation session. You are asked to say when the pressure is right, and it is adjusted whenever you want it changed.
The main drawback is that the area worked on can feel sore for a day or two afterwards, much as it might after a hard workout. It is also the wrong choice if what you want is to relax rather than be worked on, or if you are new to massage and do not yet know what pressure suits you. A relaxation or Swedish session is gentler and leaves most people loose rather than tender.
A general massage works broadly across the whole body at light-to-medium pressure, while deep tissue works slowly and firmly into particular areas of long-standing tightness. The first is what most people mean by a massage and leaves them relaxed and sleepy; the second targets one stubborn problem and can leave that area tender for a day. Which you want depends on whether you are after rest or repair.
