Classical Ayurveda · Warm oil
Abhyanga and Shirodhara, performed in the traditional technique rather than as a spa approximation of it.
Abhyanga is the cornerstone of Ayurvedic daily practice: a full-body massage using generous quantities of warmed herbal oil, applied with long strokes along the limbs and circular strokes over the joints. The technique follows the direction of the body’s channels rather than Western muscle anatomy, and the rhythm is steady and unhurried throughout.
Shirodhara is a different proposition entirely — a continuous stream of warm oil poured across the forehead for an extended period. It is difficult to describe usefully until experienced. Most clients report a floating, meditative calm that continues well past the end of the session, and it is the therapy most often requested by people whose sleep or anxiety has not responded to anything else.
Both can be done at home, though Shirodhara needs a little more setup and works best in a room where oil on the floor is not a concern. Tell us which you want when booking, or describe the problem and we will suggest which of the two fits.
Suitability
What it helps with
The session
Herbal oil is heated to body temperature. Cold oil in Abhyanga defeats the purpose entirely.
Applied with the direction of the limb rather than across it, in a steady unchanging rhythm.
Shoulders, elbows, knees, ankles. The joints get proportionally more attention than in Western massage.
Gentle, following the traditional sequence rather than working by muscle group.
Either a thorough oil scalp massage, or the continuous warm-oil stream across the forehead.

At your home
Everything is brought to you: a premium massage oil or nourishing body cream and a clean, professional massager, for you alone.
Included with every session
Small touches that come with your massage to ease you into deeper relaxation and help your natural happy hormones flow — always included, and never charged separately.

Questions
Abhyanga is the classical Ayurvedic full-body massage using generous amounts of warmed herbal oil, applied with long strokes along the limbs and circular strokes over the joints. It is traditionally practised as daily self-care in Ayurveda, and as a therapist-delivered treatment it typically runs 60 to 90 minutes.
Shirodhara is a continuous stream of warm herbal oil poured across the forehead for an extended period. It is traditionally used for anxiety, disturbed sleep and tension headaches. Most clients describe a deeply meditative state that continues after the session.
Abhyanga uses considerably more oil than Western massage, and Shirodhara more still. Choose a spot where a little oil would not be a problem and lay down a spare bedsheet you do not mind marking; wear clothes afterwards that you do not mind marking.
No, and traditionally you would not. The oil is meant to be absorbed. A warm shower a few hours later, or the following morning, gets more from the session.
Yes, and that is the traditional pairing — Abhyanga first, Shirodhara to finish. Allow 90 minutes and mention it when booking so enough time and oil are brought.
